FIFA has imposed a worldwide football ban on a former official who secretly filmed female players at SCR Altach. The decision by FIFA's disciplinary committee on August 4th followed a joint request from the Austrian players' union VdF and the global players' union FIFPro, as reported by Guardian Football.
The man, a former match observer and club employee, filmed and photographed players of Altach's women's team in changing rooms, showers, and gym areas between 2018 and 2025, including minors. In February, a regional court in Feldkirch sentenced him to a seven-month suspended prison term, a €1,200 fine, and ordered him to pay €625 in compensation to each victim.
Why is the worldwide ban significant?
Christos Papadimitriou, women's football coordinator for VdF, stated that extending the sanction worldwide sends an important signal. "It ensures the perpetrator cannot simply move to another league or association to evade punishment," he explained. The measure highlights the growing determination of football authorities to consistently penalize abuse and misconduct in the sport and protect player safety.
What is the situation in international football?
The case in Austria is not an isolated one. In the Czech Republic, the players' union CAFH is calling for a lifetime football ban for former coach Petr Vlachovsky of FC Slovacko. Vlachovsky was convicted in May 2025 of similar offences and possession of child sexual abuse material. He received a suspended one-year prison sentence and a five-year domestic coaching ban. FIFPro stated it continues to challenge the Czech FA to implement a lifetime ban for Vlachovsky and all sexual offenders.

While these important legal steps proceed in the background, the Austria national team is preparing for its next challenges. The team, managed by Ralf Rangnick, currently sits in second place in their World Cup 2026 qualifying group. From three games, they have four points with one win, one draw, and one loss. Their record shows six goals scored and six conceded. Recent results have been disappointing, however: following a 3-0 defeat to Spain on July 2nd, they have lost their last two matches. Their recent form over the last five games is zero wins, two draws, and three losses (LLDDL).
