Marcel Sabitzer is taking a break from the Austria national team. The 32-year-old Borussia Dortmund midfielder will miss the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches to manage his energy levels.

Sabitzer cited an extremely demanding schedule over the past two years as the reason for his decision. “The past two years have been very intense.” said the veteran, who has 102 caps and 27 goals for his country.

Open talks with Rangnick

The decision was made in close consultation with head coach Ralf Rangnick. “I therefore agreed with the coach, in open and trusting discussions, that I would take a break now and that we will discuss at the beginning of next year whether I will return to the national team for the Euro qualifiers,” Sabitzer stated. Rangnick expressed disappointment but understanding, confirming a joint decision on Sabitzer's availability would be made before the start of Euro 2028 qualifying.

The break comes as Austria are on track in World Cup qualifying, sitting second in their group with four points from three games. Their recent form shows two wins, one draw, and two defeats. The next fixture is a home match against Israel on September 24, the first of four Nations League games in this international window.

Sabitzer will therefore be absent for the matches against Israel, Ireland, and twice against Kosovo. His absence presents a challenge for Rangnick in filling the attacking midfield role.
